In my early days I published from my own company in Atlanta, Georgia. The Select Publishing Corporation was based near Atlanta University on Martin Luther King Jr Drive in Southwest Atlanta.
We supported ourselves while taking in all kinds of printing jobs. We called that outfit The Select Printing Company. That work enabled us to publish eleven text books for the Professors who taught at or were associated with Atlanta University.
Some of the important works of african americans were first published at the Select Publishing Corporation during the mid 1970's. At that time african americans were not considered for any type of academic authorship for publication.
The Select Publishing Corporation received the full support of the Heritage Foundation and those efforts of Morris Brown, AU Theological Seminary, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark College, Lincoln University, Howard University, North Carolina Central University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Henry Olela, "From Ancient Africa To Ancient Greece"; a philosophy text book, was first published by Select in 1975. Toni Morrison published one her early books of poetry there and so did several other poets and short story writers many students of the AU system.
I had to learn from that experience what an ISBN identification was for and how to code the book's initital pages properly for registration in the national archives for trademark purposes and international law and distributions symbols on the run.
I went in one side with a printing company and came out the other with a Publishing Company that made history...
